One of the attitudes to recycling plastic in architectural design is it re-printing. 3D Printing of recycled polyethylene tereftalate is in its birth-days. Recycled filament can be bought in Argentina or Netherlands but lack of experience with this reborn material blocks its use in the Czech Republic. Firstly we made a study of settings of the home-3D-printers for this material. Secondly we came with a crowd printing project, which tested the possibility to print structural pieces by on various low-cost printers.
Consumer goods PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles are usually thrown away after consumption. A huge number of them ends up somewhere in the environment. In many developing countries PET bottles are used in construction, mainly as fill-in material in concrete or adobe walls. Special purpose PET bottles have been designed and produced earlier that can be stacked in wall systems. In our research we produced a special PET bottle that fulfils the following conditions: (a) produced with blow-moulding technology; (b) good stacking features to eliminate or minimize binding medium between PET bottles; and (c) produced out of recycled PET. This special PET bottle resulted in a series produced and patented brick called PET(b)rick 1.0. We subjected the PET(b)ricks to various tests as done on regular building bricks: stress, pressure, and heat-freeze. PET(b)rick has reasonable resistance to stress greatly dependent on the filling medium, low resistance to pressure, and a small bandwidth of performance in heat-freeze. We have demonstrated stable and safe application of PET(b)ricks in small seating objects. PET(b)rick does not seem suitable as a self-standing wall, but can function as easily stackable fill-in material within a load-bearing structure.
PETree je konstrukce vyrobená z drátěného pletiva a PET lahví. Ty jsou uzávěrem zašroubované do konstrukce. Lahve, které díky stlačenému vzduchu mají vysokou únosnost zárovneň vynášejí konstrukci zvící 5 metrů výšky.
This paper speaks about ambience in architecture in the flow and results of experimental design studio Achten/Novakova in Summer semester 2016 that cooperated with PET-MAT, a research team focusing on recycled plastic in architecture. This time, also questions of management of a big student group arose. Fifteen teams (50 participants) of the studio designed, presented and delivered ambient installations to the public event called Student Night. It was a small temporary architecture: bars, stage decoration, corridor decorations and furniture like tables or chairs all made of plastic. Particularly, results of research on recycled PET in architecture were implemented here in form of a new plastic brick called PET(b)rick. The Installations were directly tested by visitors of that event and have proven the concept of PET(b)rick.

According to the dictionary ambient architecture should be kind of object or space that relies to its surrounding or spontaneously reacts on the presence of human. Ambient architecture can also be musically expressed or painted. We developed special architectural building units that offer space for incorporation of intelligence and media for human interaction and for ambience.We are introducing an object called PET(ch)air made of PET(b)rick, a hollow transparent bottle-brick. The first intention was to generate new building unit from recycled PET material. Now that we observe its qualities, we can see it is well prepared for ambient intelligence application, especially in combination with light. For the purpose of a brick we are transforming old recycled plastic into new bottle-bricks. Using the bottle-brick as building unit we build interior objects that are ready to turn spaces into ambient rooms, places that can be customized by their visitors or spontaneously react on them. Together with this, we opened a design studio, where students were asked to develop ambient interior pieces for a special event using the method of learning by doing.

Recycled materials are applied regularly in building industry, especially materials that no more have aesthetic or hygienic qualities for use elsewhere. Recycled plastics are quite young and hardly researched for application in buildings. Most studies were made on the implementation of cut plastics or plastic fibres into concrete or asphalt. We developed an innovative application of recycled PET in architecture in the form of a building block, which is produced by the blow-moulding technology: a standard technology of producing packaging of beverages. Based on our previous research on the use of PET bottles in architecture, we developed a new interlocking shape of a bottle, which can be used to build structures. This so-called PET(b)rick can be interlocked perpendicularly and also in parallel which allows the construction of walls in traditional way. The load-bearing medium is air, but the cavity of the brick also allows for filling with different materials. The first test of load-bearing capabilities of such a structure was an exhibit at EXPO 2015 in Milano, where we assembled a bench made out of 72 PET(b)ricks. This object can carry more than 120 kilograms and is used as seat as well as illumination and decoration of the space.
Stavební jednotka z plastu má tvar hranolu, jehož dno (n) má poměr stran 1:2 a zkosené hrany (z) pod úhlem 45° se zaoblenými rohy (f) s jednotným radiem a výška hranolu je rovna jedno až dvojnásobku šířky. Jedna užší boční strana hranolu je opatřena výstupkem (a) ve tvaru dvou plynule navazujících rovnoramenných křížů se zaoblením ve vnitřních rozích (b) a protilehlá užší boční strana je opatřena negativním vybráním (e) odpovídajícím výstupku (a). Dno (n) je na středové ose opatřeno prohlubní (o) pro umístění až tří hrdel dalších stavebních jednotek i s víčky a výstupky (a) jsou na všech hranách (i) zkoseny pod úhlem 45° a vybrání (e) jsou na všech hranách (j) zkoseny pod úhlem 45°. Jedná se o samonosný multifunkční stavební prvek s využitím recyklovaného plastu. Prvek umožňuje plnění různými materiály a jejich směsmi, jeho tvar umožňuje vazbu mezi prvky.
