Sustainable Urban Design

Anotace

Built environment professionals should have a clear understanding of how their various interventions combine together to potentially create high quality, sustainable, people friendly, vital and presperous environments; or conversely, poor quality, alienating, dangerous, unsustainable places. Equipped with solid underpinning in urban design theory, students in this course will practice how to analyse a place (e.g. an existing neighbourhood) and its wider context using tools reflecting the functional, social, visual, morphological, perceptual, and temporal aspects of urban design. They will use the analysis outcomes to propose place-making solutions and formulate urban design brief and effectively decide on urban design tools and a participatory design process that will ensure a high quality outcome. The course combines lectures, readings and studio work as main learning methods. The project will comprise an area that has been already developed but provides poor urban design quality and has an untapped potential.
