Revitalization of the city block in Braník
Architecture and Urbanism
Annotation
The urban block located in the Prague district of Braník is currently occupied by the Baroque building of the Dominican Courtyard, surrounded by incoherent and urbanistically undefined solitary buildings from the 1980s. The aim of the proposal is to redefine this area urbanistically and transform it into a fully integrated part of the city structure, preserving its original function while enhancing the quality of public space, supporting community use, and strengthening connections with the surrounding area.
The project represents an effort to revive the deteriorating courtyard and its adjacent spaces. It seeks to find a new purpose for this Baroque structure and place it within an environment where it will no longer remain overshadowed by random acts of construction, but instead gain a new context in which it can serve local residents well while also attracting visitors to Braník, rather than remaining merely a sentimental reminder of the past.
The proposal also addresses the redefinition of the areas neighboring the courtyard, which are currently occupied by a panel housing block, a supermarket, a fitness center, and a restaurant. Within the block structure of old Braník, these buildings are regarded by many local residents as an eyesore. The design introduces new buildings that will accommodate the existing functions, add several new ones, and at the same time emphasize the genius loci of the historic part of Braník.
