Brownfield Vimperk

Brownfield Vimperk NOOK presents a design for a modern community center dedicated to socializing, education and personal development of youth from Vimperk's primary and secondary schools. It is intended as a safe space where children can spend their time after school and on weekends. In terms of function, the building integrates three main zones focused on sports, creativity, and education. The sports section includes both an outdoor and indoor gym, as well as a fitness center. The creative workshops are divided into "dirty" and "clean" zones, with the clean zone designed for computer work. The educational area features a library and a study room, complemented by additional rooms designated for purposes like lectures or group study. The main concept of the building is based on the contrast between the interior and exterior, driven by the core idea that even behind a simple, unassuming facade, an inner treasure can be hidden. This dualism is reflected in the overall layout of the structure and in the approach to both the external and internal facades. From the outside, the building appears minimalist, simple, and massive. The facade is smooth, the walls are straight, and the corners are strictly right-angled. The structure reveals little; it appears mysterious and impenetrable. Openings in the facade are kept to a minimum, enhancing its monolithic character. The glazed sections define the entrances to the building, functioning as visual bridges between external and internal worlds. The interior spaces are designed in direct contrast to the outer shell. The walls project in a dynamic zigzag shape, reflecting the complexity and intricacy of the human inner self. Unlike the heavy external facade, the internal structures are highly permeable, full of openings and glass surfaces. The building extends horizontally rather than vertically. Preserving the view of the nearby hills to the north of the plot was a primary focus. Consequently, the majority of the building only slightly exceeds the highest point of the site. The aim of the NOOK community center is to create an inclusive community hub that fosters healthy social development and provides young people with a supportive environment for personal growth.
