Transformation of Grundbach Housing Estate, Olbersdorf, Germany

The diploma thesis focuses on the transformation of the Grundbachsiedlung housing estate in Olbersdorf, a WBS 70 panel housing development built during the expansion of surface lignite mining. The current condition of the area is characterized by a high proportion of paved surfaces, an unclear hierarchy of public spaces, monofunctionality, and gradual population decline. The thesis responds to the need to adapt the housing estate to contemporary social, spatial, and demographic requirements. The proposal is based on the preservation and transformation of the existing housing estate structure, with an emphasis on improving the quality of public spaces, increasing the permeability of the area, and supporting community life. The design includes the reduction of the volume of selected buildings, the introduction of new housing typologies, and the addition of smaller-scale development responding to the current needs of residents. The proposal focuses primarily on barrier-free and community-oriented housing for seniors, complemented by public spaces that encourage intergenerational interaction. At the same time, the thesis addresses the transformation of the transportation system, the reduction of excessive paved surfaces, and the strengthening of greenery and residential outdoor spaces within the housing estate. The aim of the proposal is to create a high-quality, legible, and long-term sustainable residential environment capable of responding to future social changes as well as the future development of the housing estate itself.
