Architecture of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the path to self-sufficiency: Frameworks for the future between mountains and sea.
Architecture and Urbanism
Annotation
The master's thesis addresses the issue of architectural identity and continuity in the context of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a region significantly marked by post-war fragmentation and developmental discontinuity. The thesis consciously builds upon the theoretical legacy of the publication Architecture of Bosnia and the Way towards Modernity (Grabrijan, Neidhardt, 1957). However, in response to current global and local challenges, it critically revises their concept, defining a new paradigm: the "Path to Self-Sufficiency." Self-sufficiency is understood here not merely as technological independence, but as a complex capacity to utilize local resourcesmaterial, cultural, and social.
The core of the thesis is an architectural experiment based on the formulation of a specific methodologythe Analytical Matrix. This tool decomposes the relationships between the environment (typology, topography, morphology) and sustainability principles (surroundings, building, human factor). The validity of the methodology is tested through three case studies located in three distinct climatic zones of Bosnia and Herzegovina: in the flood-prone Brezovo Polje (a water sports club and market), in post-industrial Vareš (a community workshop and recycling center), and in Ravno (revitalization of a stone ruin).
The resulting designs hope to define a "New Bosnian-Herzegovinian Vernacular" not as a formal imitation of the past, but as a procedural logic. The projects utilize principles of robust architecture, Low-tech design, and circular economy. The thesis concludes that sustainable architecture in this region does not need to rely on imported technologies, but rather on the intelligent use of local specifics and secondary raw materials. The proposed buildings serve as initiation projects with the potential to restore the physical structure of settlements and community life.
