Brandýs nad Labem - From Factory to City: Urban Concept for the Transformation of a Brownfield

The twin towns of Brandýs nad Labem and Stará Boleslav aboast a rich historical legacy and a strategic position within Pragues immediate periphery. In recent decades, the area has faced the pressures of suburbanization and increased traffic. This masters thesis proposes an urban planning concept for the transformation of the site and surroundings of the former Melichar factory and the area adjacent to the railway in Brandýs nad Labem. The brownfield site constitutes a internal reserve for the towns development. The development of the railway stems from the need to improve the citys connectivity to the nearby metropolis and regional transportation. The aim of the project is to strengthen urban cohesion and the development of the area, taking into account the scale, proportions, and history of the original development, pedestrian, vehicular, and bicycle accessibility, and connectivity to Prague, the areas tourism potential, and demands for civic amenities and blue-green infrastructure. The proposed conceptual solution lies in the transformation of the brownfield into a mixed-use urban district and burying part of the railway line below ground level to enhance the areas accessibility.
