The main conceptual starting point of the project is the Old Icelandic magical symbol Vegvísir (Viking compass), whose footprint is literally transferred to the architecture of the gallery. Eight radial arms radiate from the central node and symbolically represent paths that help the visitor “not to lose direction” – in the landscape and internally. The building is designed as an underground structure with minimal impact on the Icelandic landscape; only sculpturally shaped skylights copying the Vegvísir symbol rise above the terrain. The interior is defined by raw exposed concrete evoking lava tunnels. The supporting structure consists of a reinforced concrete skeleton, the technical facilities are located at the lowest level.
