FUNCTION-FUSION IN POTSDAM STADTKANAL

As early as the Middle Ages, the first drainage ditches existed in Potsdam. This waterway was ornamental, but also practical for small ships and barges. 1965, the canal was filled in. Using explosives, the ornamental bridges, railings and statues were destroyed. The long alleys of trees were cut down and buried with the rubble. The reconstruction of the canal is a years long discussion. Whether the cause is meaningful enough to warrant such extensive reconstructions. Or whether there are other ways to utilize the space, that is more appropriate for modern cities. In this design, I have tried to choose a middle path. The canal would be rebuilt in a way that commemorates history, but also serves a new purpose that better accommodates the new needs of western cities.
