The Memory of Weight, Silence, and the Light of Reconciliation

Bc. Kateřina Kacetlová

Annotation

The project explores the transformation of a former slag bunker of a coal-fired power plant into a chapel intended primarily for families from a nearby children’s hospice, while remaining open to the wider community. The raw concrete mass, bearing the memory of industrial weight, is preserved and becomes the foundation of a new spiritual layer. The architectural concept is based on a vertical movement from darkness to light: a narrow ascent within the enclosed tube gradually transforms the atmosphere of the space, its light, and acoustics. The chapel is formed from within, without added pathos, as a place of silence, contemplation, and reconciliation, where pain is not concealed but transformed into a quiet memory.
