PUBLIC BUILDING ON REPUBLIC SQUARE IN PRAGUE
Annotation
Today, Republic Square is an incomplete space with no clear boundaries, resembling a traffic intersection in character. The northeast front of the square is disrupted, and its space spills outwards. We propose a pair of buildings at this location. The front building creates a new frontage for the square, while the rear building dampens the effect of V Celnici Street and ties in with its jagged character. Filling the gap in the frontage of the square creates a second space, a quiet and informal urban garden, which represents a kind of counterpoint to the busy and formal square. The design ties in with the idea of a rampart promenade. The new hierarchy of spaces requires a new paving design. We are just adding a backdrop for the already existing patters of Prague mosaic.
