Community starter housing aims to attract renewed interest in living in the city of Most while simultaneously enhancing the former barracks area through subtle architecture that connects the two sides of the road infrastructure. The project works with a light-weight ground floor, that is open to both the public and the residents of the buildings. Elevating the residential units to above the ground floor on columns allows for visual permeability and lighting of the ground floor. The interstitial spaces are designed to draw people in, guiding them as a kind of “gateway” into the barracks area, without creating the feeling of a barrier caused by crossing two traffic routes. Altogether, the buildings aim to attract new residents to Most and reverse the phenomenon known as the “shrinking city.”
