ÚSTÍ NAD LABEM - ŠACHY

The design of the residential building ensemble is based on an assignment working with the principle of a chess game. The project does not employ literal symbolism, but instead adopts the logic of the game—its rules, hierarchy, and repetition. The individual buildings are composed of typical floor layouts assigned to “lower” and “higher” pieces, repeated throughout the entire ensemble. The mirrored arrangement of the floors allows the alternation of loggias on every other level while maintaining a rational apartment layout. The uppermost parts of selected “pieces” contain atypical, high-standard residential units. The façade is defined by a shading grid offset by 250 mm, creating depth and tension between what is concealed and what is revealed.
