Living Above the Castle

Horní Lumbe Garden is a place of quiet in the middle of the city, yet it still remains slightly apart. Its particular sense of enclosure, hidden character and calm sunny centre create the potential for a space of pause, walking and encounter. The main idea of the design is not to transform the garden dramatically, but to open it in a way that makes its atmosphere more accessible. New paths, a footbridge, seating areas, a fireplace and viewpoints create a sequence of small situations that guide visitors through the gradual discovery of the space. Vegetation, wood and brick support the natural, landscape-like character of the place. In this way, the garden can become a sensitive connection between the surrounding parks and gardens, without losing its quietness and softness.
