So Firefighters Don't Burn Out

Marie Völflová

Annotation

The fire station is situated at the threshold between the city and the railway, where transport infrastructure currently forms a significant urban barrier. Its form responds to the geometry of the site, with two V-shaped wings defining a sheltered courtyard that serves as a calmer space for everyday operations. Facing the street, the building presents a restrained, compact façade of exposed concrete, complemented by a layer of perforated metal panels. The design is guided by a simple idea: to prevent firefighters from burning out. Abundant natural daylight, a clear and intuitive layout, direct access to greenery, and a quiet garden with wetlands support regeneration, collaboration, and privacy. The station is therefore more than a technical facility—it is a home for the firefighting crew.
