The Japanese approach to architecture is different from the West. Space is seen as precious and used only to the extent that is truly necessary. The character of a place is flexible and can be easily changed thanks to variable furniture or sliding walls. Boundaries are soft—between clean and dirty, new and old, interior and exterior. Society’s priorities lie in respect for work, privacy, and cleanliness. A country often afflicted by natural disasters is highly open to change and progress. The life cycle of buildings is usually shorter than in Europe, which reflects the ability to adapt and renew.
