Faculty of History

Annotation

The design of the new building of the Faculty of History of Charles University in Vyšehrad is based on the archetype of a traditional house with a gable roof, thus connecting to the historical context of the site and at the same time creating a clearly legible volume. The building is designed as a compact three-storey unit made of coloured concrete, which in its structure and colouring follows the brickwork typical of Vyšehrad. The layout of the building is three-tract with classrooms located on both sides of the central corridor with a staircase. The presence of natural light is solved in the form of square skylights, which create a rhythmic grid resembling a chessboard. This light motif adds a dynamic touch to the interior, while creating a changing atmosphere throughout the day.
