The relationship between cities and rivers has undergone a fundamental transformation in recent decades. While in the industrial era rivers were often degraded into sources of energy, transport and waste, today cities are turning to them again as key elements of sustainable development, quality public space and climate resilience. Modern urban planning is increasingly integrating rivers into urban life, through the revitalisation of waterfronts, the creation of new parks, wharves and pedestrian and cycling routes. One of the most significant trends is the renaturalisation of river channels, i.e. a return to a more natural state of watercourses. Cities such as Vienna, Copenhagen and Rotterdam are working on green riverbanks, which help reduce flood risk and contribute to biodiversity. Water
