THE GATEWAY TO HISTORY

Tobias Vaněk

Annotation

The Gateway to History connects the historic Leopold Gate with the new concrete volume of the Vyšehrad Museum, whose rough texture resembles wooden formwork and symbolizes the imprint of time. The extension creates a passage perpendicular to the original axis of the gate - the new gate within the gate - and culminates in a glassed-in viewing area accessible by an expanding staircase. The museum further develops underground in the hillside, where daylight penetrates through skylights. Next to it grows the Monument to Czech Statehood, a spiral grove of columns, each representing a Premyslovian - in height a period of reign, in thickness a historical significance. The whole is an architectural expression of the continuity, identity and memory of the Czech state.
