The key element of the design is the creation of a vibrant cultural hub with a city-wide reach – a place that will not only serve exhibitions, but also social gatherings, education and sharing. The architectural strategy for converting the late Holešovice power plant into a city gallery is built on respect for the original industrial character of the building. The idea is purification and dematerialization – both on a physical level, i.e. removing the accumulation of alterations and additions – as well as visual and spatial. The layout is based on the structure of the original building and naturally adapts it.
The result is an open, airy and legible space that allows the architectural qualities of the building and the contemporary content of the new function to stand out.
