BENEDICTINE MONASTERY WITH BREWERY

Annotation
The monastery, nestled into the hillside above the Vltava River, complements the Baroque Church of Saints Philip and James with sensitivity, without obstructing its view. Three buildings, symbolizing the Holy Trinity, embrace a cloister garden and form a quiet refuge for a Benedictine community that continues the order’s long-standing tradition of brewing beer. Two staircases connect the church with the street and also link the various parts of the monastery. The monks’ communal life unfolds on the lower floors alongside the garden, while the individual cells in the uppermost levels, thanks to their orientation, offer peace away from the noise of the world.
