Monastery in Zlíchov

Vojtech Brada

Annotation

The Franciscan monastery responds thoughtfully to its challenging location – situated between roads and a railway line, it appears from the outside like a concrete fortress. However, behind this solid shell lies a peaceful and natural environment: wooden buildings surrounded by gardens and greenery create a refuge that is both practical and symbolic. The complex includes two chapels – one indoor and one outdoor, the latter offering a view of the Church of Saints Philip and James. The layout of the courtyard and refectory is typologically inspired by the Christian basilica, emphasizing the spiritual character of the site. The monastery serves as a shelter for the homeless, who are cared for by the Franciscan brothers.
