AA Visiting School for the first time in the Czech Republic: Barrandien - Architecture Paleontology
28/4/2025

The summer school theme is the architecture of palaeontology, inspired by the legacy of the scientist Joachim Barrand, whose work on the Prague rocks laid the foundations of modern palaeontology. Participants will explore how geological strata and the natural landscape have shaped Prague's historical and contemporary form. Pavel Bouše, Miroslav Pazdera and Tadeáš Říha, graduates of the Czech Technical University, are behind the organisation of the summer school. They bring their experience from architectural practice, research and teaching across Europe to the programme.
The program combines field surveys, drawing, visual mapping, and work with paleontological collections. It will include visits to institutions such as the National Museum, the Faculty of Science of Charles University and Barrandov Film Studios, and excursions to the Prokop Valley. The historical house of Joachim Barrand in Prague's Újezd district will be the participants' home base.
The summer school is open to architecture, design, or anyone interested in the intersection of spatial disciplines and the natural sciences. Participation is open to undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students. Knowledge of special software is not a prerequisite; the emphasis will be on drawing, observation, and landscape analysis.
Students of the FA CTU will receive 2 ECTS credits for participation and successful completion of the workshop.
The faculty also offers two full scholarships for its students, who will be selected using the faculty selection procedure. Other students from Czech universities can attend the summer school at a discounted price.
Detailed information about the application, fees and scholarship opportunities can be found on the summer school website.
