Two awards in the international competition Best in Design for the work of our students

Nikola Mikulecká from the Studio Jaroš - Bednář won the Product & Industrial Design category with her Beer Stand and coasters made of porcelain. Kristián Rudenko from the Studio Fišer - Nezpěváková took the third place in the same category with Circle of Life - a bowl for life. More than 500 entries were submitted for the 11th international design competition Best in Design for young designers under 30 years of age. As it was not possible to announce the winners at the gala evening of the Zlin Design Week, the organizers announced the results of the competition on March 31 during their broadcast on Radio Wave.

The Beer Stand of Nikola Mikulecká, which  she processed as her diploma project, has three important characteristics. It's made of porcelain. It's clean. It's simple. By combining these three features, a remarkable combination of versatility can be achieved in the interior. Simplicity and purity, these inseparables of functionalism, have not lost their power in over a hundred years. The porcelain is noble in appearance, its color and luster can be easily combined with other equipment and materials. It can combine curves into one so that it looks coherent and noble without attracting excessive attention. Moreover, it is easy to clean.

Another part of the set is a collection of coasters. It does not try to be a novelty, but rather supports the tendency in the sustainability of equipping businesses with non-disposable equipment, while aesthetically complementing the beer stand. The collection consists of 8 different but interconnected plastic decors with a "sun" motif. On each coaster there is a space with a wiped glaze, which can be used to write down the amount of drinked beverages as it used to be done in the past.

The entire set is designed to fit into distinctive and generous interiors as well as classic pubs. The author realized it in the porcelain factory Dubí.

Kristian Rudenko, a third-year undergraduate student, designed a three-leg bowl that can be used both as a dog bowl and as a classic storage tray, whether for fruit, candy or other household items.

As a dog bowl makes it easier for dogs to feed, the dog does not have to strain and slouch, and can eat in an upright position, which helps the dog with digestion. The middle circle carries water, so when drinking, the pet does not splash the water on the ground, but to the outer ring. The outer ring  carries the feed in a narrow space, and thus it slows the dog while eating. The fact that it works, proves directly Kristian, who tested the bowl on his own dog and checked daily.

The bowl has the possibility to fit legs of different lengths as needed. On short legs it can be placed in the kitchen for fruit or candy. On the long legs it can serve as an organizer in the hallway. We all have a problem with emptying the pockets. Many of us place keys and wallets on the table in the living room or wherever they can. On high legs, this bowl makes it easy and organized. Ergonomically shaped bottom makes it easier to pick up small coins.

Best in Design is a competition for young designers up to 30 years of age who want to be discovered or want to move their work forward. The expert jury selected the winners from more than 500 entries and awarded them in the Product & Industrial Design, Communication Design and Fashion Design categories as well as the main prize in Best in Design Award.

In the Communication Design category, the jury evaluated the best work to the Universal Expression communication system by Lukas Keyselli. The proposal would allow the whole world to communicate no matter what language they speak. The winner of the Fashion Design category is Milan Flíček. His collection During the sunset pays tribute to two historical persons, Charles IV. and T.G. Masarykovi. Filip Zabawa won the Audience Award with his work Scale - growing bike.

For the sixth year, the event has been part of the Zlin Design Week festival (1. - 8. 5. 2020, unfortunately will not take place this year) organized by a young team from the Faculty of Multimedia Communications of Tomas Bata University in Zlín. The awarded works can be viewed on Facebook or at the end of September at an exhibition at the G18 Gallery in Zlín.
