24/2/2022

Professor Masák has been cooperating with our faculty for a long time, especially as a member of habilitation and professorial committees. In a new monograph entitled Miroslav Masák, the author, the renowned theoretician and historian of architecture Rostislav Švácha, captures the transformations of Masák's work. In the individual chapters we find Masák's commentaries on his most important projects and buildings and theoretical texts from 1966–2019.
With the author of the tower on Ještěd, Karel Hubáček, Miroslav Masák founded the famous Liberec association Sial in 1968 and organised the Školka Sial, which brought together the most talented young Czech architects of the time. Masák's important works, which he led the design of, include the Ještěd shopping centre in Liberec, which was demolished in 2009, the Máj department store in Prague and the reconstruction of the Prague Trade Fair Palace. After November 1989, as an assistant to President Havel, Masák participated in the opening up of Prague Castle, and then distinguished himself as a teacher of architecture and as a juror for many successful architectural competitions.
Miroslav Masák has received a number of awards for his work, including the Felber Gold Medal for Significant Contributions to the Development of the Czech Technical University, and he is the recipient of a number of awards from the SA CSR Architecture Showcase, the Vladimír Karfík Award, the Czech Chamber of Architects Honour and the Ministry of Culture Award for Contribution to Architecture.
The publishing house Arbor Vitae was founded in 1992. Since its foundation, it has been publishing publications on art, architecture, organizing and producing exhibitions. The publishing house divides its production into several editions, the latest of which is the edition O poslání architektů.
We thank Professor Masák for kind permission to use photographs from the book.
