The International Union of Architects UIA awarded Vladimír Šlapeta

The Jean Tschumi Prize is awarded every three years by the UIA to the greatest personalities in the field of architecture. Professor Vladimír Šlapeta was recognized for his architectural writing and criticism. The award ceremony will take place in Copenhagen in July.

The Council of the Association of Architects sent a total of four nominations from the Czech Republic: '"The Jean Tschumi Prize jury selects from nominations sent in from all over the world, so there is a lot of competition. I am all the more pleased that the prize was awarded to Prof. Ing. Arch. Vladimír Šlapeta, whom I congratulate from the bottom of my heart." Oleg Haman, Chairman of the Council of the Association of Architects, commented on the success.

The jury at the Czech representative appreciated especially the extraordinary contribution to the field in the area of teaching and from the position of the dean of the two largest schools of architecture in the Czech Republic. It also highlighted the rich publishing activity, the organisation of exhibitions and the ability to specify the uniqueness of the Czechoslovak architectural avant-garde in an international context and scale.

Vladimír Šlapeta studied architecture at the CTU in Prague and began working as an architect in Ostrava in 1972. A year later he became head of the architecture department of the National Technical Museum in Prague until 1991. In the same year he was the dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the CTU until 1997 and then the vice-rector of the CTU until 2000. In 2003 he was again elected Dean of the Faculty of Architecture of CTU. Three years later, he became Dean of the Faculty of Architecture of Brno University of Technology. He made a significant contribution to the popularisation of architecture among the general public and his knowledge enriches the knowledge base of the history of architecture across Europe. Significant are his medallions of personalities of Czechoslovak interwar architecture and the genesis of organic modernist architecture of the first half of the 20th century.
