Annotation

In the past, city entrances were formed by gates... what about today? Today, we do not feel the obligation to ceremoniously welcome visitors to the city, and so the boundary between the city and its suburbs often disappears. The need for city defense has also vanished, and with it the physical walls—and the gates along with them—have faded away. Nowadays, gates represent only a sort of imaginary entrance to the city, but does that automatically mean they are unimportant? Through an urban design proposal, I aim to create a new image of the city entrance along 5. května Street, while also establishing a quality connection between the existing development and the new one, and overcoming today’s territorial barriers, which are primarily transport infrastructure.
