Annotation

The Šachovnice apartment building is part of the Malý Vimperk complex, which transforms a former brownfield. The building grows out of a change in terrain with a part of its mass integrated into the terrain. The southwest side is planar, articulated by a circular staircase functioning as a landmark, clearly defining the entrance to the building and responding to the former industrial character of the site. The mass of the building deliberately breaks from orthogonality: it is slanted towards the south behind the sun. This leaves the surrounding houses clear for views, while accentuating the entrance to the site with its geometry. On this façade, deep loggias are arranged in a checkerboard composition, allowing the building to offer two apartment types. Through the loggias and the varying.
