HVERFJALL

Hverfjall. Iceland. A location authentic in its nature, culture, and almost mythical character. The design of the Research Station was approached with the idea of preserving the genius loci. The architecture is hidden beneath the surface, manifesting itself only through a symbol – Vegvísir, the mythical compass. The center, rays, and eight symbols are connected with an offset, creating a unique space divided into different functions (accommodation, laboratories, etc.). The infrastructure of the corridors is designed with a focus on connectivity, clear orientation, and the integration of visitors and employees. Technical room meets with the dominant power of the space. Tubes concealing the distribution systems copy all the arches and curves, thereby enhancing the character of the room
