Santini transcends space and time. Different perspectives on his work will be presented at the international conference

This year marks the 300th anniversary of the death of architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichl. The significant anniversary did not escape the attention of the leading expert of this artist, Professor Pavel Kalina. In collaboration with foreign colleagues, he has prepared an international conference in Rome on 6 and 7 June 2023.

Professor Pavel Kalina, as a representative of the Faculty of Architecture of the CTU in Prague, Professor Augusto Roca de Amicis from the Sapienza di Roma University and Petra Březáčková from the Czech Centre in Rome have prepared a rich programme with the participation of leading figures in the field. All of the speakers have been involved in Santini at an international level for a long time.

"The aim is to summarise the existing knowledge of Santini's work and at the same time to enable its reinterpretation," says Pavel Kalina, adding that "the organisation of the international conference is important not only for Santini research itself, but for a better understanding of Baroque culture and European cultural interconnectedness in general." The results of the conference will be especially beneficial for the Czech Republic, as Santini is one of the few Czech architects whose work has received attention abroad. This is evidenced by numerous monographs in German, Italian, French and Dutch.

On the first day, 6 June, at 17.00, the international meeting will be opened by Antonella Polimeni, Rector of La Sapienza University, Rome, and Orazio Carpenzano, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture of La Sapienza University. Speakers on behalf of the Czech side will be Martin Procházka, Rector of Palacký University in Olomouc; Jan Kohout, Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Italy and Petra Březáčková, Director of the Czech Centre in Rome. This will be followed by lectures by Paolo Portoghesi, Pavel Kalina and Augusto Roca De Amicis.

On the second day, June 7, the lecture panel continues with presentations by Richard Biegl (CZ), Michael Young (USA), Ulrich Fürst (DEU), Johana Bronková (CZ) and Marisa Tabarrini (IT).

The Santini and Italy Conference will take place on 6-7 June 2023 in Rome at the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca. It will be held in English and Italian, and is open to professional and general audiences. The full programme can be viewed HERE.

In addition, from 29 September to 5 October, another event focusing on Santini's work will take place as part of the Architecture Day festival. A lecture by Professor Pavel Kalina will take place at the Church of St. Kajetán in Nerudova Street.

Miroslav Pavel is responsible for public relations at the Department of Theory and History of Architecture.
