A fully self-sufficient house for the new millennium? It will be designed by Winy Maas' students
7/9/2023

Is it possible to create a material that provides light, generates energy, filters, retains and produces drinking water for plants and animals to live in? What would a household made entirely of this biomaterial look like? And what ecosystems and housing infrastructure would be created? Students will be looking for answers to these questions as well during the winter semester. Using spatial analysis and digital data, they will conduct detailed research on the needs and ecological impacts of current housing. On the one hand, the team will explore currently available technologies, but at the same time they will come up with ideas for completely new solutions and practices for building eco-friendly, carbon-neutral and self-sufficient homes. The results of the team's work will then be presented in January through a film and physical installation in the faculty atrium.
The BioHouse assignment also includes a weekend workshop at the Müller Villa. During the workshop, the students will examine the unique Loos raumplan and propose modifications to it that respect today's requirements for accessibility.
The studio will be led by visiting professor Winy Maas, assisted this year by Barbora Rozálie Strnadová and Michal Zapletal, students of the Master's program in Architecture and Urbanism.
Applications in the form of a portfolio and a short motivation letter should be sent to strnadova.br@gmail.com. Submitted work can be related to the theme and/or method of this study (i.e. animation, filmmaking, etc.). The deadline for online submissions is Wednesday, September 13 at 1:00 pm. Decisions will be sent out on Friday, September 15; a limited number of spots will be available in person on September 18 in room 649 after the studio assignment presentations.
The visiting professor's studio is funded by the European Union through the National Recovery Plan and the Ministry of Culture, with the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
