On May 16, 2022, the newly renovated City Slaughterhouse in Ostrava, a dilapidated, listed industrial building in the city centre for many decades, was opened. Following an architectural competition launched by the city in 2017, the slaughterhouse was adapted for the needs of the local PLATO Gallery according to a design by Polish studio KWK Promes architect Robert Konieczny.
The slaughterhouse will be open to the public until June 10 before the gallery's regular program begins this September. Part of the open house month is also an exhibition called Reactivation, curated by Jakub Potůček and organized by the Research Centre for Industrial Heritage of the Faculty of Architecture of the CTU.
In addition to the presentation of the building itself, the history of the Ostrava monument and future plans for the surrounding area, visitors can learn about other examples of slaughterhouses in the Czech Republic or conversions of industrial buildings for cultural purposes in the last twenty years.
