CHURCH FOR ŘEPY

Architecture and Urbanism, MA diploma project

Annotation

The design part of the diploma thesis deals with the adaptation of an unused technical building in a residential environment into a space with a completely new function and meaning. The building of a former boiler house in Prague's Řepi district is transformed into a community and spiritual centre that responds to the current problem of peripheral neighbourhoods - the lack of natural meeting places and shared identity. I perceive the existing building as a local landmark, although it is very modest in form and expression. Its location and composition are of high urban quality and, above all, it is part of the identity of the settlement. The main shortcoming for me is its enclosure to the surrounding area. The aim of the design is therefore to preserve the building as much as possible, adding only a few new openings and a new translucent roof structure over the church space - this will outwardly symbolise its new role.
