On the occasion of the anniversary of Jan Palach's act, the National Museum would like to invite you to the presentation of the book HRANA by Pavla Melková and Petr Blažek.
The book Hrana guides us through the memorial to Jan Palach in Všetaty. It is about the life of Jan Palach and society in his time and in the present, about architecture and its ability to speak, about our personal role in shaping the world. We walk through the symbols that are contained in the architectural and artistic layer of the house, as well as through the information concentrated in the historical exposition of the museum. The form of the memorial is symbolic of a situation in which the edge of evil, and with it a challenge, intervened from the outside into the life of a country, a family and a person. It emphasises the significance of the act of hearing the call of history by an individual and thus highlights the validity of Palach's act for the present on a universal level. It refers us to listening to the challenges of today and responding to them personally.
