PÍSEK - NURSING HOME
Architecture and Urbanism, MA diploma project

Annotation
This diploma thesis focuses on the design of a retirement home in Písek. As part of the pre-diploma seminar, a suitable site was selected based on urban, social, and functional analyses. The chosen location lies in close proximity to the Otava River and directly connects to the historical center of the town. The site offers strong urban connectivity, beautiful landscape views, and the potential to create a calm and dignified environment for a new senior housing facility. The main design principles include spatial clarity, barrier-free accessibility, proper orientation to the cardinal directions, and integration with the surrounding public space. The massing of the building is based on the concept of two wings connected by a central communal area. A key architectural feature of the design is the generous glazing of the shared spaces facing the river, providing strong visual contact with the surrounding landscape. The building consists of two above-ground and one underground floor and accommodates up to 106 beds. The operational layout ensures a clear separation between the movement of residents, staff, and visitors. Emphasis is placed not only on functionality and operational efficiency but also on creating an environment that feels calm, natural, and homely. The design responds to the urban context, the height of adjacent buildings, and the topography of the site. The project also includes a publicly accessible section of the garden and a pedestrian connection to the footbridge over the river, linking the site to the broader structure of the town.
