Already five talented young architects, winners of previous years of the Kaplicky Internship competition, have already completed internships in prestigious London studios. They worked in the studios of Eva Jiřičná, Zaha Hadid, Allies and Morrison, Adjaye Associates and last year's winner, our graduate Ondřej Pokoj, in the Heatherwick studio.
Students can enter the Kaplicky Internship competition during the last year of bachelor's studies, during the follow-up master's studies or during the first year after graduation. The topic of the competition works is free, students can submit their bachelor's or master's theses with a written work on the topic "Jan Kaplický and Architecture" and submit them by July 6, 2020 (deadline extended). The selection of the internship participant takes place in the form of a non-anonymous two-round competition. Details on the criteria and the course of the competition can be found on the Bakala Foundation website.
The winner of the 6th year of the Kaplicky Internship competition will spend three months in the London studio of another important British architect, the founder of the famous 9H gallery, David Chipperfield. He founded his own studio in 1985 and today has offices in Berlin, Milan and Shanghai, in addition to London.
Last year's winner Ondřej Pokoj captivated the jury with his project of a transfer hub for Prague Airport called Transferium. Earlier this year, he completed a three-month internship at Thomas Heatherwick's London studio and is now a permanent member of his almost 200-member team. "A year after defending my diploma thesis, I found myself in London in the world studio of Thomas Heatherwick, whose realization we stared at with an open mouth at school. The introduction to the studio was very warm from everyone. The very next day, Thomas himself came to me to greet me, saying that he had already inspected my portfolio. There was no better entry into the studio than by winning a competition - a skill only valued in the architectural world. Participation in the Kaplicky Internship competition will forever remain a milestone in my life, "says Ondřej Pokoj, a former student of Studio FLOW.
We wrote about his transfer node project here and his Transferium Prague adorns the title page of Prague Technology 1/2020, where there is also an article about it.
