CONVERSION OF A HISTORICAL BUILDING IN THE KARLÍN BARRACKS COURTYARD

The thesis loosely follows the pre-diploma seminar on the conversion of industrial buildings, which was developed in the Tichý studio. The seminar analyzed the concept of conversion. Industrial development in Bohemia, as well as construction methods and their impact on cities, the influence of mechanization on industrial buildings, and finally the decline of industry. Several projects located in the Karlín district were analyzed. This district is also home to the Karlín Barracks, which is the focus of this thesis, more specifically the courtyard building. The construction program builds on future plans for the barracks, space for art schools, and opening up their mass in connection with the city. For this reason, functions such as a low-threshold center, starter housing, and a multifunctional hall were chosen, which aim to integrate individuals from the margins of society and offer them a safe base for a new start.
