Studio querkraft

A

living factory

WS 2025

the querkraft studio is continuing its series of tasks dealing with the transformation/conversion of existing objects. our goal is to teach students to use existing resources in particularly creative ways.

this time, the project involves vienna's largest building in terms of floor space. a huge hall measuring 800 x 150 m stands empty. opel's gigantic car production at this location is history. what should become of the existing halls now?

the task is like a symbol of the transformation of our economy. away from a car-centric world towards something that is people-centered, lively, ecological, and green.

only part of the overall site will be worked on during the winter semester. the extension of the subway line will be a central component, with a building serving as a hub for further uses being the most urgent planning priority. this building (with the subway station) will be the starting point for the conversion of the entire site (a hybrid building that may include various functions - residential, work, production, traffic, leisure, cultural etc.).

as is usual for our studio, we will discuss what people need, what the city needs, and what is right for this location.

in the second semester, we will work with the entire site of former factory halls.
