Annotation

The assignment of the site in South Town, specifically Opatov station, presents a complex urban planning challenge: to create a dignified urban centre for the largest Czech modernist settlement, which still lacks one. The site is of particular interest due to its location on the axis of Wenceslas Square and its significance as the 'Gate to Prague'. The design emphasises a balanced mix of housing, employment opportunities, and amenities with the aim of creating a vibrant, self-sufficient urban community of around 5,000 residents and 18,000 jobs. The urban concept is based on two main axes: Central Park and Chilská Street. The intersection of these two axes at the Opatov metro station is designed as a new square with commercial and cultural functions. Skyscrapers characteristic of the area close the park axis and symbolically refer to the original concept of the centre.
