THE BRUTALIST ACROPOLIS OF PRAGUE / From Modernist Urbanism to a Functional City

In 1973, the monumental Nuselský Bridge spanned the deep canyon of the Botič stream and thus connected the city center with the Pankrác area. This area suddenly became the most developing area in the whole of Prague, which was a manifesto of the modern architecture and urbanism of Prague in the second half of the 20th century.
One of the most distinctive and unmistakable symbols of this modern development of Prague has become the southern forecourt of the Nuselský Bridge. A new "acropolis" grew here, which became a modern counterbalance to the medieval acropolises of Prague Castle and Vyšehrad.
Brutalist composition of the massive Palace of Culture (today the Congress Center Prague) and the skyscraper of the Forum Hotel (today the Grand Hotel Prague Towers), between which passes the 4-lane north-south highway, crowned by a giant junction and a jumble of roads, parking lots, manipulating areas and footbridges. Visible from Prague Castle and located next to the historic Vyšehrad. Brutal contrast.
The city is like a concrete statue, without human scale, inhospitable, unfrendly to pedestrians.
There is no clearly defined public space, the pedestrian is disoriented and lost in the concrete jungle. He doesn't know where the entrances to the buildings are, he wanders around the glass facades and gropes.
There is no connection with the Nuselské Valley, the center of Prague, the Vltava river and the surrounding districts.
The task for students of Ateliér Šindlerová / Urban Planning Studio in the winter semestr 2025/26 will be:
The search for a completely new urban planning solution for the southern forecourt of the Nuselský Bridge and the wider area, which will have these main goals
- establishing a legible structure of public spaces, safe and friendly for pedestrians and adapted to climate change
- completion of the urban structure of buildings, in which people will find their way around, while at the same time respecting the values of brutalist buildings
- the incorporation of the original brutalist buildings into the new urbanism
- the addition of new functions supporting the vibrancy of the area 24/7
- humanization of highways and fundamental suppression of the influence of cars
- the design of new convenient accesses to the Nuselské Valley and a comprehensive solution for the connection with the city center
- cultivation of the area under the Nuselský Bridge and its northern forecourt
THE ASSIGNMENT ALLOWS THE CHOICE OF DIFFERENT PROCESSING SCALE, FROM LARGE CONCEPTUAL URBAN PLANNING, THROUGH SMALLER URBAN TASKS TO THE SOLUTION OF SELECTED PHENOMENA IN THE AREA.
THE ASSIGNMENT IS ALSO SUITABLE FOR LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS, BECAUSE DESIGN OF BLUE-GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE, SOLUTIONS OF ACCESS TO THE BOTIČ VALLEY ON THE SLOPE OF THE CANYON AND OTHER URBAN LANDSCAPE TOPICS WILL BE KEY!

- EXCURSION TO THE PALACE OF CULTURE AND THE FORUM HOTEL WITH A GUIDE
- CONSULTATION OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS
- ACCOMPANYING LECTURES BY HISTORIANS OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING SPECIALIZING IN 20TH CENTURY ARCHITECTURE

SPATIAL PLAN OF THE CITY OF BENEŠOV
WS 2025
Join the students of the spezialized SPATIAL PLANNING MODULE and try out the development of a spatial plan for the city of Benešov!
Take advantage of the unique opportunity offered by Ateliér Šindlerová, specialized in teaching urbanism and spatial planning. You can learn how a real spatial plan is processed and thus experience the real work of a spatial planner.
Work in one team with students who specialize in the study of spatial and strategic planning, and for them the development of a spatial plan is a mandatory studio assignment.

Studio project SPATIAL PLAN OF MILOVICE by SPATIAL PLANNING MODULE students Karolína Čechová and Victoria Cheremnykh won the 1st prize in the DEAN AWARD 2022 competition in the Urbanism category! Build on their success.
In last winter semester 2023-2024, students of the SPATIAL PLANNING MODULE Lada Doubravová, Daria Krasnolutska, jakub Naništa, Tomáš Kadlec and Adéla Novanská worked on a studio project SPATIAL PLAN OF PŘÍBRAM, which will be exhibited at T. G. Masaryk Square in Příbram throughout September 2024 as part of an exhibition of students' works of Studio Šindlerová on the topic of development planning in Příbram:

In the Studio Šindlerová, the preparation of the diploma seminar is an entry condition for the subsequent preparation of the diploma project.
