The conference will focus on the genesis, functioning and contexts of the work of the Czechoslovak Stavoprojekt, but also on the topic of central planning in other countries of Central and Eastern Europe and further abroad. The aim of the conference is to create a platform for the discussion of methodological approaches to the study of the history of architecture and the architectural profession in the period from the end of the Second World War to the late 1950s, when prefabricated construction became widespread in European socialist states.
Czechoslovak Stavoprojekt was established in 1948 as a state design organisation. In many respects it represented the fulfilment of the visions of the left-wing avant-garde, but it was also a response to current social and economic changes and to the need for large-scale reconstruction of the war-affected economy and settlement. The activities of Stavoprojekt covered a wide range of architectural and urban planning tasks, from infrastructure and industrial buildings, to housing, public buildings and conservation, to typology, urban design and spatial planning. The effects of centralisation on domestic architecture were far-reaching and transformed the local landscape and settlement for decades.
