Thyroid hormone plays an important role in bone remodeling and histomorphometric studies have shown that thyroid hormones simulate osteoblastic and osteoclastic activities in cortical and trabecular bone. Excess thyroid hormone leads to high-turnover state, bone resorption rate exceeds bone formation rate resulting in a decrease in bone mass. Estrogens show a profound effect on bone homeostasis by protecting the skeleton against resorbing action of parathormone.
