Sustainable Renovation of School Buildings in Czech Conditions - Case Study in Bustehrad

Mgr. Tomáš Vácha

Three pillars of sustainable design cover environmental, social and economy issues. Building sector as a technical one sometimes focuses only on solving technical problems which brings only short term solutions. Quality of those particular solutions is often of the highest level but the overall quality in long term perspective is not achieved. The project “Renovation and increasing of capacity of the elementary school in Bustehrad” is an example of a complex approach in the Czech conditions. Single technical solutions used within the project do not bring an extra innovation or technological breakthrough but the project as a whole brings complex quality in long term perspective. The project was initiated by the local municipality of Bustehrad and financially supported by the grant of the Ministry of Finance. The methodology and project coordination was carried out under the leadership of UCEEB CTU and is linked to the building assessment methodology EDUSBtoolCZ. The core of the methodology is based on: - Involving of all participating groups in the whole duration of the project – teachers, pupils and parents were interviewed at the beginning of the project to find their real needs and priorities. Feedback from the stakeholders will be gathered several times during the project and final evaluation of the project is going to be organized. - Architectural competition to find optimal functional and architectural solution. - Tight cooperation among architects, engineers and builders. - Ecological design based on using natural and renewable materials, design in low energy standard and using of renewable energy.
