Assessing architectural heritage: identifying and evaluating heritage values for masonry and cast-iron buildings and structures

prof. Dr. Ing. Martin Pospíšil, Ph.D.

Determination of heritage value of a structure or of its part is a very important step before choosing a particular survey method and subsequent renovation technique. Setting the level of possible invasiveness of survey and renovation methods is highly important for both quantity and quality of information which can be obtained during diagnostics processes and very decisive for setting the most suitable reconstruction technique in structural heritage. This research applies a specific form of structural analysis to define and quantify heritage values of both heritage listed and non-listed load-bearing structures (with a special focus to masonry and cast-iron structures). The method is based on a partition of a complex term heritage value to its elementary parts such as historical value, age value, use value, creative value, craftsmanship value, etc., which are then evaluated and put back together to help to create more objective opinion on a heritage value of the whole structure or of its part.
