Assessment of properties influencing the ageing of ceramics

Firing a ceramic raw material produces a reatively homogeneous composite with a complicated mineralogical composition and a considerable part that is noncrustalline phase. Long-term moisture action causes the water to bind a certain amount of water in the structure of non-stable non-crystalline phase of porous ceramic material. This process leads to long-term volume changes, whitch is symptom of ageing and is called irreversible moisture expansion.
