The paper focuses on the key factors that have impact on the architectural form of the office buildings in Karlin, Prague. Karlin, a former industrial quarter, has undergone a massive spatial and functional transformation in the post-socialist period. The research is based on semi-structured interviews with the stakeholders operating in the area and compares the spatial arrangement of the new office complexes with the original development. The theoretical framework combines the open building approach, space syntax methodology and risk aversion concept.

The paper investigates the way social relationships of two different groups of people are reflected in architectural and urban form of buildings. The case study analyses Holesovice, a quarter of Prague, Czech Republic, which is undergoing the process of gentrification. Our research compares spatial characteristics of the new development and original constructions and identifies key differences. The methodology framework is based on the Space Syntax theory and Urban Morphology, supplemented by interviews with inhabitants, developers and city officials. Holesovice is a former industrial suburb of Prague, built mainly in 19th century. The original construction was formed by large regular blocks with private courtyards in the centre. After 1990, when the new economic model entered the Central Europe, many industries were transferred to countries with lower taxes and fewer regulations. Most of the factories and docks were abandoned and therefore offered cheap development sites in exclusive locations, close to the historical city centre and next to the river. The change of economic model together with the “Back-to-city movement” made the areas such as Holesovice attractive for new middle class people, socially strong, often working in international companies. The very character of their work, their engagement in international communities and their strong social position assumes the preference for transpatial relationships over the spatial ones. In the paper we will show how the new developments exhibit different architectural and urban characteristics compared to the original construction. We will argue that the new urban typology and architectural expression reflect the social relations of the gentrified inhabitants. The analysis of the city structure and information provided by interviewing the developers and city officials allow us to understand the change of lifestyle in gentrified quarters and formulate factors leading to these spatial changes.

This paper presents an ongoing research of the relationship between geographic space of a settlement and the behavior of selected group of inhabitants. We use Radotin, a quarter of Prague, as the settlement and women with children as respondents, for whom we construct the behavioural space. By comparing behavioural and geographic spaces we identify cases when people use remoter service even though similar service closer to their home exists. We offer some explanations for their decisions but also suggest further research that incorporates space syntax approach to analyse how different routes to a service can influence its usage.

In the paper we analyse the character of spatial boundaries of buildings and examine their correlation with social changes. For a case study we use Holesovice, a quarter of Prague, Czech Republic. This city part is a typical example of originally industrial suburb with a large number of factories, docks and railway station, all built mainly in 19. century. In the last 15 years the area has gone through gentrification that significantly changed its urban and architectural face. The transformation also affected the character of services and cultural facilities available in the area. We compare boundaries of the original construction and boundaries of the new developments built in the last 15 years. The analysis is done at the scale of buildings. Our methodological framework is based on the Space Syntax theory and Urban Morphology. The studied characteristics are integration of accessible spaces and design of boundaries. The paper identifies urban and architectural features that correspond and reflect the lifestyle of the gentrified part of population.

Globalisation significantly affects the shape of our cities. It is possible to observe tendencies towards suburbanisation, decay of city centres and decline of local small- scale manufacturing. Unused ndustrial sites are frequently refurbished or rebuilt into modern residential housing or commercial centres. From the architectural and urban viewpoint, the new areas differ from the original development. New buildings are often designed as clusters of slabs surrounded by open public space. The original houses are usually closed blocs with private courtyard in the middle. The declared meaning of the new construction is openness and accessibility. The aim of this paper is to investigate whether this declared meaning corresponds to the perceived reality. Our approach is based on the theoretical work of B. Hillier and H. Lefebvre. The indicator used for assigning meaning to the space is Hillier’s integration. The method is demonstrated on Holesovice suburb of Prague.

This paper presents the results achieved in first 5 months of a three-year research project. The project objectives are to develop methodology that helps to identify the relationship between semantics of the city space and its spatial characteristics. Understanding the semantics of townscapes and the impact of townscape on people’s behavior may increase our comprehension of how different city structures influence people’s cognitive space. The results can be used in similar localities to support the development of a stronger relationship of people to the place and community
