Původní objekt z roku 1997 téměř zoufale potřeboval celkovou modernizaci a zvětšení objemu, aby špička české reprezentace nemusela trénovat na chodbách a v kancelářích.

This paper presents a project intended to make complex theory of “Edge of Chaos” tangible through an interactive installation based on metamaterial research, that demonstrates emergent behavior using Cellular Automata techniques, illustrated through sound, light and motion. From the “Edge of Chaos”, a mathematical space discovered by computer scientist Christopher Langton (1997), compelling behaviors originate that exhibit both degrees of organization and instability creating a continuous dance between order and chaos. We present a multi-sensory narrative approach that encourages playful exploration and contemplation on perhaps the biggest questions of how life could emerge from the disorder of the universe? We argue a way of creating intelligent architecture, not through classical Artificial Intelligence (AI), but rather through Artificial Life (Alife), embracing the aesthetic emergent possibilities that can spontaneously arise from this approach. The Edge of Chaos installation is an explicit realization of creating emergent systems and translating them into an architectural design. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of a custom CA for maximizing aesthetic impact while minimizing the live time of architectural kinetic elements.

Příspěvek uvádí výsledky analýzy chemického rozboru malty odebrané z historického opevnění města Beroun. V rámci celkového hodnocení byly provedeny tři zkoušky: vizuální hodnocení, analýzy pomocí elektronové mikroskopie a kvantitativní analýza salinity. Účelem tohoto průzkumu jsou analýzy materiálového složení malty a omítky z historického opevnění Berouna pro účelu návrhu jeho rekonstrukce.

Contemporary wooden architecture comprises various ways of using of timber. Wooden structure is always an assembly of various types of elements – beams, columns, plates etc. that are joined together in different ways. Timber construction is not a homogenous mass (as concrete for example). This point causes many specifics for the planning process from very early beginning to the realisation of the building. BIM can be very helpful tool in this process. BIM is not only a 3D planning that serves for generating of 2D drawings and visualisations. It offers many possibilities of use of data generated from the model. This contribution shows possible ways of BIM utilisation mainly for a specific type of timber construction – CLT/ Cross laminated timber. It deals also with various possibilities of application of BIM (not only) for timber architecture in general. It looks for ways of use of BIM that are interesting, but that are not are not much applied.

In 1945–1948, a period of hybrid democracy and building of the welfare state, Czech architects and planners began asking how ‘our workers’ actually want to live. To ascertain the opinions and preferences of future residents of planned mass housing developments, they began to use public opinion polls. In Czechoslovakia, these surveys were conducted less frequently and a few years later than in Great Britain, Scandinavia, or France. However, they still provide a noteworthy and relatively comprehensive source of information.

In the interwar era the automobile was a sign of social prestige and a modern, active lifestyle; consequently, the associated services were provided in an elegant, competitive, business-like manner. But the post-war shortage in automobiles and the change in political system, which put an emphasis on quantity (over quality), ushered in an altogether different architectural philosophy, based on a rational approach and making maximum use of standardisation. Despite the theorists who long highlighted the shortage of sheltered parking spaces and criticised the open car parks that had become a blot on the urban landscape, for a long time the mammoth bureaucracy ignored the need for parking garages. Demand in society nevertheless eventually led to the construction of many interesting structures – from independently built individual garages, to the construction of parking garages to service the needs of housing estates or serve as noise barriers or built into the underground of apartment buildings, to the charming roadside restaurants and service and petrol stations that were almost constructivist in the practicality of their design.

Even though there are different nations, different culture or different habits among the countries of the developing world, the architecture of Catholic cathedrals, churches or chapels has the same goal – to create dignified space for worshipping close to its visitors. A particularity of the Roman Catholic Church architecture (the sacral architecture in general) of the lower economy countries consists in the funding of the projects. While there are many building intentions or projects dealing with complicated financing, a lot of churches, especially cathedrals or basilicas can boast their greatness owing to the Catholic Church itself, enlightened leaders of the countries or many anonymous foreign donors etc. This paper discusses the forms and shapes of the Roman Catholic Cathedrals built in the 20th and 21st century in the third world countries and the access to its felicitous design. Selected examples from the different developing countries all over the world are expounded on the background of the interference of the former colonizers countries architecture (e.g. Sacred Heart Cathedral, Casablanca, Morroco), inspiration from the traditional architecture and materials (e.g. Basilica of Uganda Martyrs, Namugongo, Uganda), creating the own style (e.g. St. Paul’s Cathedral, Abidjan, Côte D’Ivoire) or following the world trends (e.g. Sacred Heart Cathedral, Kericho, Kenya). The gulf between the secular and sacral architecture is not omitted. In conclusion, there are several ways of the access to the design of the Catholic Church architecture in the developing world and these are shown on the examples in this paper. They open the discussion about the life cycle of the architecture, its subsequently costs and well considered choice of the propriety material as well as the shape and resulting form.
