Anotace
The hop-growing areas around the town of Žatec are a valuable example of an agricultural cultural landscape, whose significance has been recognized not only through protection in the form of the landscape heritage zone 'Žatec Hop Landscape' and the safeguarding of individual structures (such as hop warehouses, drying facilities, and Stekník Chateau), but also by its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List as "Žatec and the Landscape of Saaz Hops" in 2023.
Hop cultivation, or rather the existence of hop fields around Žatec, has been documented since the mid-16th century, with a notable increase in cultivation from the mid-19th century, which was also linked to landscape changes due to the construction of railways for the export of processed hops. The widespread cultivation of hops in the region is further evidenced by records of hop production even in locations that today no longer resemble agricultural landscapes.
The Žatec region, which has existed since the 13th century, covered an area comparable to today’s Ústí nad Labem Region (and parts of the Karlovy Vary Region). Records of hop field areas can be found in the Stable Cadastre from 1845, even in settlements located in the present-day districts of Most and Chomutov, or in the historical districts of Kadaň, Bílina, and Duchcov. These areas, historically formed by agricultural cultural landscapes, underwent turbulent development in the second half of the 20th century, when the expansion of surface brown coal mining transformed agricultural lands into so-called "lunar landscape". A similar fate, including the disappearance of hop fields, befell several villages that were lost due to the construction of the Nechranice Reservoir between 1961 and 1968.
