This paper analyses the transformation of commercial facilities and transport system in Pelhrimov - a town with heritage protected centre. We focus on the period from the socialist to the post-socialist era. We analyse the position of the commercial facilities within the town, their relationship to the transport system and the spatial boundary between the public space and the buildings. The subject of analysis are the archive documents comprising the land use plans and accompanying reports. The results show the close relationship between the historic centre, the market, and the transport until the second half of the 20th century. The socialist planning operates with the land use maps, cancels the concept of a street and separates different functions of the settlements. Consequently, the commerce facilities are separated from the main transport routes. The socialist centrally-planned system allowed demolitions of parts of historical towns and a subsequent development of large scale department stores. The post-socialism era reintroduces the concept of a street and talks about humanisation of the former transport routes. Nevertheless, the new streets do not follow the traditional street typology with close contact between the passers-by and the commercial activities in buildings. Instead, it introduces large-scale commercial centres with spacious parking lots, accessible mainly by cars.

The towns and cities in the post-socialistic countries witness the construction of large-scale commercial centers near busy transportation roads. Especially in small or medium-sized towns, the new commercial centers create an alternative focus of activities in relation to the traditional historic center. The town center with a square and small-scale shops do not serve for everyday use as they did in the past. This paper presents the results of the first part of a project looking at the people’s use of commercial services in the traditional shops in historic parts of towns and new shopping centers near the highways. In this paper, we make our observations on a case study - Pelhrimov - a 16-thousand inhabitant town in the Czech Republic. We observe the use of the historic square and the commercial centers and make interviews with the town´s inhabitants about their commercial habits and the use of space. The first findings allow us to describe the people’s understanding of the public space of the town, the values that they assign to the two commercial places and the spatial attributes that the commercial places represent.

Active school transport (AST) - walking or bicycling from home to school at least once a week - brings the children health benefits but it also helps to develop sustainable mobility in the city. Together with building social relationships in the environment it forms one of the principles of the Smart City concept. The ultimate decision whether an eleven-year-old child will actively travel to school is definitely in the hands of the parents. AST differs from the moderate walking activity of adults. It is a very complex problem influenced by social aspects of the family and the perception of the environment. This paper searches for the most influential factors that affect if a child will perform AST or not and subsequently analyses the selected route. The pilot study took place in Radotin, Prague. The route choice is studied using the Space syntax variables - choice and integration, the urban qualities such as the presence and width of sidewalks, street maintenance or active facades along the journey. The interpretation of the environment is collected through semi-structured interviews with parents and their eleven-year-old children attending primary school in Radotin. The first outcomes indicate that parents perceive AST very positively. Children usually start to perform AST around the age of 10. Some of them are escorted to the school in the morning by their parents and use AST only for the way home. The children are very familiar with the environment. The route choice approximates to the straight direction between school and the child's home; even though it can result in a quite complicated journey. The number of turns, the number of segment and the Space syntax choice values of the selected route do not seem to overweight the directional factor that affects the route choice. The selection of the specific route can be influenced by its urban qualities. Especially, active facades with good visual street control are appreciated.

This study examined differences in the floor-plan preferences of architects and laypersons with no architectural education or experience (non-architects). Qualitative data on floor-plan preferences were collected using interviews and an online survey. The floor plans used in the online survey were differentiated primarily by spatial arrangements and included the original layout of a socialist prefab apartment and two contemporary redesigns of the space. The results showed significant differences in the floor-plan preferences of architects and non-architects. Topological properties of layout and a required level of privacy were identified as key factors influencing the between-group differences. Architects and non-architects disagreed in particular over how the public and private zones were defined and arranged in the apartment layouts. From the perspective of architectural practice, understanding non-architects’ preferences can decrease the uncertainty in new product development for an unknown end user and increase residential satisfaction.

The paper focuses on the key factors that have impact on the architectural form of the office buildings in Karlin, Prague. Karlin, a former industrial quarter, has undergone a massive spatial and functional transformation in the post-socialist period. The research is based on semi-structured interviews with the stakeholders operating in the area and compares the spatial arrangement of the new office complexes with the original development. The theoretical framework combines the open building approach, space syntax methodology and risk aversion concept.

The paper investigates the way social relationships of two different groups of people are reflected in architectural and urban form of buildings. The case study analyses Holesovice, a quarter of Prague, Czech Republic, which is undergoing the process of gentrification. Our research compares spatial characteristics of the new development and original constructions and identifies key differences. The methodology framework is based on the Space Syntax theory and Urban Morphology, supplemented by interviews with inhabitants, developers and city officials. Holesovice is a former industrial suburb of Prague, built mainly in 19th century. The original construction was formed by large regular blocks with private courtyards in the centre. After 1990, when the new economic model entered the Central Europe, many industries were transferred to countries with lower taxes and fewer regulations. Most of the factories and docks were abandoned and therefore offered cheap development sites in exclusive locations, close to the historical city centre and next to the river. The change of economic model together with the “Back-to-city movement” made the areas such as Holesovice attractive for new middle class people, socially strong, often working in international companies. The very character of their work, their engagement in international communities and their strong social position assumes the preference for transpatial relationships over the spatial ones. In the paper we will show how the new developments exhibit different architectural and urban characteristics compared to the original construction. We will argue that the new urban typology and architectural expression reflect the social relations of the gentrified inhabitants. The analysis of the city structure and information provided by interviewing the developers and city officials allow us to understand the change of lifestyle in gentrified quarters and formulate factors leading to these spatial changes.

Publikace představuje různorodost vnímání architektury uživatelem a tvůrcem.
